As you may already know, Glaucoma is caused from build up of pressure within the eye. Glaucoma is also the leasing cause of blindness worldwide. New smart contacts could be made possible to measure pressure within the eye by using a new material developed by biomedical engineers at UC Davis.
The idea started with a material called polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Researchers then developed a method for placing powdered silver on the PDMS in a precise pattern, to create conductive wires. After doing this scientists were able to create a contact lens shape which then could be used to measure the pressure of the eye.
This is pretty amazing, and the new technology sounds like it will help uncover the mystery of Glaucoma and help provide better treatment.
